According to Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, the monthly active users of Thareads have surpassed 400 million in Meta’s narration. This represents an increase of 50 million compared to April. According to the first quarter of 2025, published by Meta in April, Threads had about 350 million users at that time. Meta indicated that the length of user stay in the application had also increased, thanks to its continuous optimization of Threads algorithms.
Adam Mosiseri announced: “The data from a few weeks ago indicate that Threads has surpassed 400 million monthly active users. Developments over the past two years have been remarkable. Initially, this was just an idea to challenge Twitter and has now evolved into a powerful platform for open exchange of views. I thank all the users who have collectively shaped today’s Threads.”

The latest data indicate that Threads maintains an overall growth curve and is approaching the X platform on a monthly active user basis. Although Elon Mask claims that X currently has 600 million live users, actual data — both from X’s own reports and from third-party analysis agencies — indicate that X’s user size is shrinking over time.
In fact, X ‘ s report to the EU shows that since Mask took over the application, its European user base has been lost 15 per cent. Third-party analysts noted that while X remained in the lead on web traffic, its mobile end-user had declined significantly. Given that web traffic represents only a small fraction of the total use of X (about 20 per cent), all data except Mask himself suggest that overall use of X is actually declining rather than increasing.

This bodes well for the fact that Threads is approaching the point of being the preferred real-time social media application for most users. Threads was launched in July 2023 as a direct rival of Meta ‘ s standard X. As more and more users, including Internet reds and stars, turn to the application, the interaction on Threads continues to warm, adding another winning chip to Meta ‘ s social media competition.
In addition to X, Bluesky has recently emerged as a rival. Bluesky ‘ s partial attraction stems from the nature of his non-large company and is therefore not unduly constrained by shareholders, billionaire owners or political interference. But Bluesky’s development fell short of initial expectations, and as an alternative to de-X-centreization, the application, with a surge in enrolment following last year’s elections in the United States, was expected to become another important force in the US media market. However, its growth has now slowed significantly, with a total of 38 million users remaining. Although Bluesky is still growing and has an enthusiastic and active user base, it seems difficult to become a major competitor in this field.

However, current market variables still exist. The continued involvement of Mask and Zuckerberg in the United States’ governing game has had a considerable negative impact on Musk and is a danger for Meta. If mainstream applications reproduce the loss of users, Bluesky is still waiting.
There are indications that this may have occurred, and that the recent contentious events of X, which have not pushed users to Bluesky as in the past, may have gone to Threads, which is helping Threads become the key rival of X. As long as Zuckerberg and his team do not suddenly issue radical and anti-user statements, Threads may soon become the leader of the competition.
With its over 400 million active monthly users, Threads is extremely attractive to advertisers. Meta has positioned Threads as a platform for advertisers to reach large audiences without relying on X or other platforms. Meta has opened up advertising worldwide and is testing video advertising.

Threads are likely to replace X as a leader in real-time social life. As the Threads team has focused more on providing relevant real-time information, the platform appears to be close to finding a perfect formula to stimulate immediate interaction. In any case, Threads has become a significant platform and another instrument in the expanding advertising arsenal of Meta.
