TikTok U.S. Joint Venture privacy policy tightens and will allow the collection of user-specific location data

TikTok ‘ s new United States joint venture recently updated its privacy policy and announced that it would expand its data collection for 200 million United States users. This revision took place on Thursday this week, following the completion of transactions by byte between United States investors and the United States, with the aim of establishing entities that operate independently of the United States.

Under the new privacy clause, the joint venture could now “collect accurate location data based on user settings”, whereas the previous policy allowed only “approximate” positioning information. Corporate policy complements that such precision location sharing is not yet operational in the United States and is expected to be an optional feature for default closure, which users will select through bullet window tips. TikTok did not disclose when the update covered United States users. Long before the establishment of the joint venture, TikTok had collected location information through its user SIM card or IP address, but, under the 2024 version of the privacy policy, it did not collect GPS proximate location data from United States users using the latest version of the application. The current precision location sharing feature is not active in the United States and is expected to be an optional feature for the default closure, and the user will select it through the bullet window. TikTok did not disclose when the update covered United States users.

As part of the newly introduced `near referral’ function, TikTok has collected similar data in the United Kingdom and Europe, which can help users to detect surrounding activities and businesses. The United States Joint Venture has also expanded its mandate to gather information on user interactions with TikTok ‘ s artificial intelligence tool, including instructions and questions submitted by users, and metadata such as time, location and manner of AI content generation. The newly established TikiTok United States Joint Venture consists of three management investors, including a cloud-calculating giant that invests heavily in AI infrastructure. The new joint venture stated in its Thursday statement that its mission was “to protect United States user data, applications and algorithms through comprehensive data privacy and network security measures”. The statement stated that Oracle would oversee the retraining of the TikTok content recommendation algorithm based on existing United States user data, which “will be held in trust in the Oracle American cloud environment”.

Other management investors include the United States Science and Technology Investment Corporation, Silver Lake Capital, and the Abu Dhabi State Investment Fund MGX, which deals with the Tromp family enterprise World Liberty Financial. Byte beats retain 19.9 per cent equity.
