In response to the Platform ‘ s allegations of child abuse, Roblox enforced the age certification system last week, requiring all users using the chat function to do so through a self-captioned age assessment or a higher-level government identity document (optional for over 13). However, less than a week after the system went online, the system experienced multiple disruptions and, according to the Connect magazine, serious miscarriages of justice that confused children and adults.

It has been reported that a 23-year-old user has been wrongly sentenced to 16 years of age (who says “who wants to talk to little kids?”) and that 18-year-olds have been divided into 13-15-year-olds. Inverse miscalculation also exists, with minor users placing wrinkles and wiping the virtual image deceptive system through AI, and even users uploading star photographs as adults. In addition, Roblox revealed last week that some parents performed age verification on behalf of their children, which resulted in children being placed in the 21+ category. The company indicated that it was “developing solutions to such problems” and that progress would be announced as soon as possible.

Thousands of negative comments have emerged from the Roblox Developers Forum, and many have called for the update to be withdrawn. Data shared by developers show that the use of platform chat functions dropped sharply from about 90 per cent to 36.5 per cent. The developers described the game environment as “dead as a ghost town”, reflecting the devastating effects on social ecology of forced facial recognition. Underlying this move is growing legal pressure, the states of Louisiana, Texas and Kentucky, in the United States, have filed charges for alleged child abuse on the platform and the Attorney General of Florida has issued criminal summonses. Roblox ‘ s viability can be said to depend on its effectiveness in dealing with the problem, and the current confusion is clearly not encouraging.

The crisis also highlighted the eternal game of the UGC platform between the protection of minors and user experience. If Roblox fails to repair the system’s loopholes as soon as possible, it may face a triple blow of loss of users, withdrawal of developers and stricter supervision.
